Records of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, C.S.A., 1861-1865.

Records consist of orders, reports, enlistment papers, rosters, returns, and other items. General and special orders (1862-1865) are from the Headquarters of the First Military District of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida to various officers at batteries and stations on James Island (S.C.). These locations were Fort Johnson, Fort Lamar, and Fort Pemberton; camps Guerry, DuBose, Hagood, Gadberry, and Suber; batteries Haskell, Marshall, and Cheves; and stations at Royall, Secessionville, Legare's Point, and Dill's Bluff. Included are many orders issued by General P.G.T. Beauregard and General R.S. Ripley. Other correspondence chiefly consists of reports, including reports of effective strength, and inspection, ordnance, quartermaster, and signal corps reports of units and stations on James Island and elsewhere. Included are telegraph messages. There are also ordnance and troop returns mainly for units at James Island. The commands most frequently mentioned in these records are the 7th, 25th, and 27th South Carolina Infantry; the 1st and 2nd South Carolina Artillery; the 5th South Carolina Cavalry; the 8th North Carolina Regiment; and the 6th, 19th, 32nd, and 54th Georgia Regiments. Enlistment papers dated 1861 to 1863 certify the enlistment (at Charleston, S.C.) of various individuals in the Army of the State of South Carolina for a period of three years. Enlistments in 1864 were made to the Army of the Confederate States of America. The occupation, age, and physical characteristics of recruits from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and elsewhere are recorded on the forms. Records also include rosters of officers; a list of passwords; rosters of the sick and wounded; tally sheets (October 1863) for the election of officers for the 32nd Georgia Regiment, Companies D and K; and proceedings of a courtmartial trial (August 1863) on James Island, with a related letter.
